Homemade Wheat Crackers

Addictive soft wheat crackers with a hint of molasses and brown sugar, perfect for any occasion.

Every Thanksgiving and Christmas my mom makes this recipe (quadrupled!) and serves with a cheeseball while the other food is being prepped.

I personally love to make these crackers as an any day anytime treat, served on a wood board with fruit and cheese to feed whomever is around our busy house.

Before beginning, I encourage you to take a moment to feel your feet on the ground and breathe. I like to put my hands on my chest and stomach, close my eyes, and take deep breathes until I feel my nervous system relax. Starting this practice can help shift cooking from a chore on your to do list to a practice that deeply nourishes your body and soul. It’s worth it to take the time!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 6 tablespoons cold butter, diced

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 2 tablespoons molasses

  • Cornmeal for sprinkling

  • Salt for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl:
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 tablespoons brown sugar

Cut in with a pastry blender:
6 Tablespoons butter

Combine separately and stir in
1/2 C. Water + 2 Tablespoons molasses

Knead until smooth
Butter a sheet pan, sprinkle with cornmeal, and roll out dough (use extra flour for rolling if needed)
Cut into squares, poke holes with a fork, and sprinkle with salt (optional)
Bake for 10 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Tips:

  • Use a floured rolling pin or even a flat-bottomed cup to roll out the dough.
  • For thinner crackers, use two baking sheets and roll thinner.
  • Don’t try to cut the crackers into perfect squares, the variety of shape makes them even more beautiful
  • This recipe is easily doubled or quadrupled for a crowd
